Let your jazz tweet be heard!

Subject: #JazzLives -- A Twitter Campaign By Listeners of Live Jazz

August 27, 2009

To: Listings/Critics/Features
From: Jazz Promo Services

New York -- A grass roots group of jazz journalists and broadcasters, websites, bloggers, and presenters have launched a #jazzlives campaign on Twitter, using the social networking platform to demonstrate that recent reports of jazz's demise are, in the words of Mark Twain, greatly exaggerated.

According to data from a 2008 survey of audience participation in the arts released by the National Endowment for the Arts and featured in recent articles in the Wall Street Journal and the New York Times, fewer people are hearing jazz live, and fewer of them are young, that at any time since World War II. Yet on the basis of "anecdotal evidence" and observation at jazz events, the survey may have overlooked significant segments of the jazz-enjoying populace.

So an informal circle of jazz activists is trying this experiment to generate new numbers: Get people at live jazz events in the next weeks -- including but not only the Charlie Parker Jazz Festival (NYC, Aug. 29 -30) and Labor Day weekend fests in Tanglewood, Chicago, Detroit, Los Angeles, Aspen, Vail, Philadelphia, Chapel Hill, etc. -- to add #jazzlives to tweets about who has been heard, and where.

So far principals of AllAboutJazz.com, JazzCorner.com, Jazz Promo Services, the Jazz Journalists Association, the Tanglewood Jazz Festival, the Angels City Jazz Festival, the Chicago Jazz Festival, the Detroit International Jazz Festival and WBGO have signed on to promote the #jazzlives campaign. So have bloggers Larry Blumenfeld, Nate Chinen, the Jazz Police, Willard Jenkins, James Hale, Don Heckman, Peter Hum, Howard Mandel, Plastic Sax, Doug Ramsey, Hank Shteamer and A Blog Supreme (NPR), among others.

Including the "hashtag" #jazzlives will allow tweets to be searched and collated on Twitter, TweetDecks and other digital devices. A campaign widget which can be embedded in blogs and websites will exhibit the tweets as they roll out in real time.

For the widget or more information on this campaign, write tweetjazzlives@gmail.com.

For this campaign, "jazz" is defined loosely -- as each listener who tweets chooses to define it. To participate, tweet about who you hear perform and where the performance was, adding the hashtag #jazzlives and whatever else fits in Twitters 140 character limit. Tell jazz-listening friends to do likewise to prove jazz lives.

Blues guitarist Ernie Southern: Every Day is a Fight

Orange County Music Examiner Gary Schwind

"Sometimes you encounter an artist and you find yourself grooving to every tune on an album. That is what happens when an Ernie Southern album plays on my stereo.

The albums opens with the title track, which is a slow groove that would brilliant coming from someone's front porch. Southern's National Resophonic guitars are not only made to play the blues, but also a treat for the ears..."

Another small piece of Florida's musical history...

#JazzBluesFlorida #jazz #blues #Florida #Concerts #Festivals #Clubs

Memphis Musician Jim Dickinson Dead at 67
August 19, 6:02 PM
Little Rock Entertainment Examiner
Mitch McCracken

"Memphis musician, songwriter, producer and engineer Jim Dickinson, who was one of the architects of the Memphis sound (a combination of rock, pop, blues, country, and rhythm and blues) in a career that spanned more than four decades, died Saturday in his sleep at a Memphis hospital. He was 67 years old. In June he had triple bypass surgery and had been suffering from intestinal bleeding problems.

Just a week ago on August 8th a group of Memphis’ finest musicians took to the roof of Hotel Peabody in an attempt to raise money for Dickinson’s mounting medical bills. Included in that show were of course the North Mississippi Allstars, Jim’s sons Cody and Luther Dickinson make up two thirds of the group. Joining them were John Hiatt, Jimmy Davis, Sid Selvidge, Amy Lavere and Shannon McNally.

....It was in December of 1969 that he headed to Muscle Shoals, Alabama and played piano on “Wild Horses” for the Rolling Stones Sticky Fingers album. By 1970, the Dixie Flyers moved to Miami, Florida, contracted to Atlantic Records as the house band backing such artists as Aretha Franklin, Sam & Dave and Jerry Jeff Walker."

"My Les Paul Story" by Roger Hurricane Wilson

#JazzBluesFlorida #jazz #blues #Florida #Concerts #Festivals #Clubs

Hi all!

Roger "Hurricane" Wilson, a good friend of Jazz & Blues Florida, sent this story in with the kind offer to use as we saw fit and we decided there was no better use than to put it out to you ASAP. Enjoy. We see it as a true reflection of one musical gentleman by another.

Les Paul
We are all saddened by the loss of the legendary Les Paul. We know that he changed the world of music with his inventions of sound on sound recording, as well as the invention of the solid body electric guitar. Many know that he crossed many boundaries by winning multiple awards for his achievements, as well as inductions to various halls of fame. Many obituaries, tributes, and eulogies are being written about Les Paul. When I was in the broadcast news business, one of my bosses told me, “If you are going to write something, tell me something I don’t know!” Well here goes! It is true that for me, being friends with a guy like Les Paul would never be an unwanted attribute, but in my case, it was truly unexpected.

In September of 2003, I was on tour in the Northeast, and I decided I wanted to catch one of Les Paul’s weekly shows in New York City. A couple of friends and I decided to make the trip to the Iridium Jazz Club near Times Square to catch Les’ show. After paying the thirty or so dollars each to get in, we were there! I was really excited to be able to catch the guy in action that I had read about for many years, plus for the years of my playing the model of guitar named after him… The Gibson Les Paul! I had determined that I was going to make this night pleasurable and go easy on myself. I wasn’t going to try to get an autograph, or get on stage, or schmooze, hustle, or do any kind of PR or music business. It was just going to be a guitar lesson for me.

The lights went down, and Tom, the sound man announced, “And now the man that has changed the course of popular music for all of us, Mr. Les Paul and his trio.” It was amazing, and I was enthralled! There he was, in the flesh… the guy that invented multi-track recording, and the solid body electric guitar. I was savoring the moment and was oblivious to everything else around me. This was what I was waiting for. After about 3 or 4 songs, Les starting cutting up with the crowd and the band. It seemed that someone on the front row was talking to him, and had said something on the order of “I play guitar too”. Les replied, “so you play too, well come on up here and show us what you can do.” At that moment, a well dressed Middle Eastern Indian gentleman approached the stage. He strapped on the guitar that Les keeps on the piano for just such occasions. I wasn’t sure what was happening here, and I was trying to figure it out. The guy started playing the introduction to T-Bone Walker’s Stormy Monday… BADLY! Now I was getting worried! The hair on the back of my neck was starting to stand up. My friends, Bobby and John, knew I was starting to get restless.

I was trying to keep from turning green and to not have my clothes split off me like The Incredible Hulk. The guy played the one song, and he was off the stage. It really wasn’t a pretty site. By this time, I was fit to be tied, mainly because I couldn’t leave this night with that vision in my head. Les resumed his show and I did eventually calm down to enjoy the rest of the set.

At the close of this, the first show, the announcement was made that CD’s could be purchased from Les’ son, Russ. I immediately went to him, bought a CD, and asked him if that last appearance had been planned. He said that they had never seen the guy before. I explained to him who I was, and that I was on tour, and that I had my first Les Paul guitar when I was 18. Russ said if he had known I was there, he would have gotten me up to jam. I immediately said, “I’m still here!” He said OK, come on back and I’ll introduce you to Dad. I was caught off guard by his response and ecstatic at the same time! When I met Les, it was like talking to an old friend. I explained to him my situation, and he seemed pleased. He said to stand by the stage and he would get me up with him. I did that and was beside myself. In the next set, he called me up with no idea of who I was or what I could do. I introduced myself to the audience over the mike telling them my name and how honored I was to be there. I immediately launched into a simple version of “Everyday I Have the Blues”, with the band following. As I played and sang, Les was smiling. After that song, he said, “Well what else ya got?” I went into a slow B.B. King Blues classic, “Sweet Little Angel”. That was exciting since, I made it to the second song!” Les and I swapped some licks back and forth. He and I were having a ball! The first guy got the hook after the first tune. When I came off stage, I was walking on air. This was a day I would never forget!

Over the next few years, I would return to jam with Les and the band another 6 times. I became friends with the band and crew, Lou, Nicki, John, Tom, and Chris. Les’ son, Russ, and I would stay in touch, and during my trips to the northeast, I would attend his Sunday night jams at various locations around northern New Jersey, and then go into the city to see Les. The stories I was hearing from him were priceless. He told me how he got Mary Ford to speak into a mike down the hall, and when he heard her voice repeated on the extra tape head he installed, he knew he had found the thing that would change music recording forever. He told Mary to grab the laundry, throw it in the car, and that they were heading to Chicago. She kept saying, “What if it doesn’t work?” During that trip from California, by the time they were in New Mexico, he was wondering if it would work. He then said, “By the time we got to Chicago, I had convinced myself that it wasn’t going to work”. He was thankful that when they drilled the first hole in a new Ampex tape recorder in Chicago to add the extra record head, that “we didn’t screw anything up!”

During another of my visits, Les simply said, “Man, if I was to ever retire, I would just die!” He was 89 then! Another time, I was helping the guys carry some gear up to the street to put in the car. After 2 shows, he had signed autographs for a line of people that circled the inside of the club. He had signed everything from guitars to pictures, to records, to pick guards, to you name it! After signing every last item, Les was still downstairs in the rest room. As I headed back in, the manager at the door with keys to lock up said, “What did you forget?” I said Les is still in the club! I ran back down and got him. I’ll never forget Les Paul holding on to my arm as we climbed the stairs at 1 A.M.

When he turned 90, it seemed that the world showed up to witness him. The crowds were lined up out the door at the Iridium on Monday nights. Interviewers from all walks of media were at the dressing room door for weeks before and after his birthday. I had the pleasure of sitting in with him 3 days before his actual 90th. The big event was a couple of weeks later at a star-studded event in Carnegie Hall.

My last visit with him was in November of 2007, at age 92. When my friend, Bobby Lyons, and I arrived at the Iridium early, Les was having his usual dinner in the dressing room. He was always eating his dinner on a turned on the side audio monitor cabinet. I always wondered why they didn’t get him a small table in there. This time, when I arrived, Les responded and waved slowly. It was a little disconcerting to me, be we left to grab a bite before the show. When I returned, I happened to be in position to help him on to the stage. He ambled to his chair, picked up his guitar, and as soon as the introduction announcement was made and the lights came up, “It Was Showtime!” He was back! I got to sit in both sets that night! After the second show, he came back into the dressing room, collapsed on the couch and said, “Man I’m Tired!” I said, “Les! Are you OK? I was really quite concerned about you earlier”. He said, “Oh yea, I’m fine. I’ve just been putting in these 14 hour days”. I replied, “14 hour days! What are you doing?” He said, “I’m still working on these guitars”. “What are you doing to them?” I asked. “I’m still trying to get that sound right!” I was amazed! This is why he would jump out of bed every morning to keep “chasing sound”.

The amazing thing about Les, is that, with as many important and well-known people that he associated and rubbed shoulders with, he would always remember the guys, like me, who loved to play guitar. He would sign guitars when I would take them in, and he would always write something nice. “Keep picking” was a favorite, but the night he wrote, “Those Were Some Great Blues!” I was pretty well knocked out. He actually confessed to me that since he was more commercially oriented, he didn’t know much about the history of the Blues. He asked me to explain it to him. I sat in the dressing room of the Iridium one night and gave him my basic simple interpretation of the origin of the Blues. He sat there listening carefully, really soaking it in. I couldn’t believe that Les Paul was actually learning something from me!

Just during the month of June this year, I attended one of Russ Paul’s jams in New Jersey. My plan was to go into New York City on the Monday afterward to see Les. Russ told me that Les hadn’t been able to make some shows in the last few weeks, and he had been in and out of the hospital. He had even missed his 94th birthday gig on June 9. I was concerned about it, but Russ said his Dad was doing better, and that he was itching to get back to work. If I knew anything at all about Les, I knew that was true. He said that his Monday gigs at the Iridium were just like celebrating New Year’s Eve every week. He proved to me many times that having a passion for something in life will keep one alive. For a guy like Les Paul, and with a life like he had, we can’t afford to mourn his loss as much as we need to celebrate his life. We need to “KEEP ON PICKING”!

Starting in bebop and hard bop, Coltrane later helped pioneer free jazz. He influenced generations of other musicians, and remains one of the most significant tenor saxophonists in jazz history. He was astonishingly prolific: he made about fifty recordings as a leader in his twelve-year-long recording career, and appeared as a sideman on many other albums, notably with trumpeter Miles Davis and pianist Thelonious Monk. As his career progressed, Coltrane's music took on an increasingly spiritual dimension. His second wife was pianist Alice Coltrane, and their son Ravi Coltrane is also a saxophonist."

FIRST ANNUAL “MIAMI MUSIC FESTIVAL” ANNOUNCED - And now accepting performance applications

#JazzBluesFlorida #jazz #blues #Florida #Concerts #Festivals #Clubs

Three-day Showcase and Conference for Emerging Musicians Presented in Association with
The Miami Herald, Miami-Dade County and City Groups Scheduled For December 10-12, 2009.

(Miami, FL) August 13, 2009 – Media and event producers In Tune Partners announced today that it will join with The Miami Herald, El Nuevo Herald, Miami.com and city and county government departments to present more than 600 performances by new and developing musical artists on 25 stages, and hold a music industry conference, this winter in the Brickell area of downtown Miami.

The event will be produced in cooperation with Yamaha Corporation of America, Broadjam.com, and Performing Rights Organizations ASCAP, BMI, SESAC and Sound Exchange. Sponsors interested in reaching entertainment oriented consumers and influencers should go to miamimusicfestival.org for more information.

Independent musicians and emerging artists on independent and major labels alike have increasingly used live and online showcasing to capture broad audiences of music fans, and events like the MMF have been successful at helping musical acts find audiences and distribution opportunities.

“The event is open to all artists and genres and will present rock, alternative and singer/songwriter acts, but will feature Latin, Urban, Caribbean and Jazz,” said In Tune CEO Irwin Kornfeld. “The live music scene in the Brickell area has really been heating up, and its cluster of venues is perfect for an event like this. The days following Art Basel, the biggest arts event in America, in early December is also a great time to visit Miami.”

Miami’s Transit Lounge owner, In Tune president and Chairman of the Miami-Dade Film and Entertainment Advisory Board William Edwards said, “The outpouring of support from venue owners, hotels, local colleges and universities, The Greater Miami Convention and Visitors Bureau, The Miami Downtown Development Authority, and the Miami-Dade and City of Miami Cultural Affairs departments has been amazing. Music needs this festival, and Miami wants it here.”

Miami-Dade County Mayor Carlos Alvarez said, “Miami has always been home to a diverse array of musical styles, artists and industries, and I’m looking forward to The Miami Music Festival welcoming a new generation of music makers to Miami-Dade County and the City of Miami.”

Conference speakers and Festival sponsors will be announced in the coming weeks.

Woodstock's Origins in Florida Avant-garde Jazz?

#JazzBluesFlorida #jazz #blues #Florida #Concerts #Festivals #Clubs

Jazz & Blues Florida's Contributing Editor, Bob Weinberg, has posted an Examiner blog that puts the spotlight on Abbey Rader.

"...not many people realize that the roots of Woodstock are firmly entrenched in South Florida soil. The event's co-founder, Michael Lang, came to Miami in 1966 to open a head shop and went on to produce 1968's Miami Pop Festival, which was more or less a dress rehearsal for Woodstock. (You can read about it here.) What's more, one of South Florida's greatest avant-garde jazz drummers was responsible for introducing Lang to Artie Kornfeld, his primary partner in the Woodstock venture."

Check out the full entry and leave a comment (Your Woodstock story or perhaps your Miami avant-garde jazz story?)

Miami, Florida's Tigertail Productions to Include Incredible Jazz & Blues

#JazzBluesFlorida #jazz #blues #Florida #Concerts #Festivals #Clubs

Tigertail's 30th Anniversary Season of Art and Soul

(MIAMI, FL – August 10, 2009) Bringing the best of global performance and literary arts to Miami for three decades, today Tigertail Productions announced a 30th season that speaks to the region's multicultural identity in playful, inspiring and challenging ways. The arts organization revealed a 2009/2010 agenda of art and soul – careening from Dutch jazz to incred-Able dance, spoken word, Delta blues, venerated virtuoso guitar and acclaimed Catalonian culture.

And while bringing the world to South Florida, Tigertail is also fostering area artists, building youth projects, producing community residencies and commissioning new work.

Tuesday, October 6, 2009, 7:00-9:00pm: Known for memorable celebrations, Tigertail's 30th Season Kick-Off Party will overtake the chic new urban River Lounge in the Epic Hotel, at the mouth of the Miami River (former Dupont Plaza location). Preview our upcoming events, enjoy music, video, special surprises and complimentary drinks while taking in the dashing view of the Miami River and Biscayne Bay. RSVP not necessary, but capacity is limited.

October 15, 2009, 7:30pm: Books & Books, Coral Gables, will host a free book launch and reading of Tigertail, A South Florida Poetry Annual. This 7th edition, subtitled "Three by Three", is edited by Denise Duhamel, Michael Hettich and Campbell McGrath - each of whom selected one poet. The poets are Jill M. Allen, Yahya Frederickson and Hugo Rodriguez.

October 24, 2009, 8:30pm: The Byron Carlyle Theater in Miami Beach will come alive with an incredible free jazz trio, The Third Man, from Amsterdam. Tigertail brings this new group – with Han Bennink on drums, Michael Moore on reeds and Will Holshouser on accordion – to Miami as part of a 10-city tour of the U.S.

December 28, 2009 - January 3, 2010. The 10th annual danceAble, a Tigertail/Florida Dance Association (FDA) event for able and non-able dancers, takes place within the FDA WinterFest. The two organizations are part of a multi-site commissioning project whereby New York City-based choreographer David Dorfman is setting a new work on the leading U.S. mixed-ability group: AXIS Dance Company. In addition to this new work, AXIS will be in residence and will perform Vessel by Alex Ketley.

January 24-30, 2010: Tigertail presents our fourth annual SpeakOut project for GLBT teens. This year we are bringing Regie Cabico, a writer/playwright and spoken word artist who will be in residence working with GLBT teens at Miami Dade Public Schools and Pridelines.

February 20, 2010, 8:30pm: Enjoy Tigertail's evening of Mississippi Delta blues at the Colony Theatre, Miami Beach, with David "Honeyboy" Edwards, a 94-year-old Grammy-award-winning blues guitarist – one night only.

March 20, 2010, 8:30pm: The brilliant virtuoso guitarist Leo Kottke performs solo – one night only at the Colony Theatre, Miami Beach.

April 4-10, 2010: Tigertail presents Catalonia Days, a series of events that focus on Catalán food and culture. Wait for coming detail on Catalonia Days, featuring new Spanish cuisine from Barcelona, new architecture in Spain, fashion, a look at the influence of Antonio Gaudí and Salvador Dalí, and more. As part of the series, on April 9 & 10, 2010, 8:30pm, at the Colony Theatre, Miami Beach, Tigertail presents a stunning, young, dance group from Barcelona. Alta Realitat, performing Ölelés, a dance piece at once gripping, physically intense and genuinely lyrical by acclaimed Catalan choreographers and performers Jordi Cortés and Damián Muñoz – two of Spain's most innovative young artists.

April 11-16, 2010: In the sixth annual nationally recognized WordSpeak project for inner city teens, Tigertail will bring actor, activist and spoken word artist Bobby LeFebre as artist in residence. Spoken word – what performers call "spitting" – includes workshops, slams, open mic sessions and rehearsals from January - July 2010.

May 15, 2010: Set aside the date of the next legendary annual Tigertail party for fun and fundraising.

For information and a full schedule of activities see the attached schedule, visit www.tigertail.org or call Tigertail Productions at 305 324 4337.

Jacksonville, Florida, Official Band celebrating 25 years of Big Band Jazz

#JazzBluesFlorida #jazz #blues #Florida #Concerts #Festivals #Clubs

From Financial News & Daily Record
08/07/2009
by Max Marbut
Staff Writer

"The whole thing started in 1984 when Ira Koger, a Jacksonville real estate developer and philanthropist, came to the conclusion that something that had never before been seen or heard here needed to be added to the city’s cultural fabric: the St. Johns River City Brass Band.

Now a quarter of a century later and with a slightly different name, the St. Johns River City Band has evolved in terms of musicians and music and accounts for some of Jacksonville’s most notable musical history. It remains an important element of the cultural scene not only in North Florida but statewide as well."

Happy Birthday Satchmo!

#JazzBluesFlorida #jazz #blues #Florida #Concerts #Festivals #Clubs

Louis Daniel Armstrong (August 4, 1901 – July 6, 1971), nicknamed Satchmo or Pops, was an American jazz trumpeter and singer.

Coming to prominence in the 1920s as an innovative cornet and trumpet player, Armstrong was a foundational influence on jazz, shifting the music's focus from collective improvisation to solo performers. With his distinctive gravelly voice, Armstrong was also an influential singer, demonstrating great dexterity as an improviser, bending the lyrics and melody of a song for expressive purposes. He was also greatly skilled at scat singing, or wordless vocalizing.

South Florida JAZZ Releases 2009-10 Season Schedule

#JazzBluesFlorida #jazz #blues #Florida #Concerts #Festivals #Clubs

Fort Lauderdale, FL – South Florida JAZZ, coming off its most successful season, and the principal purveyors of modern jazz in the region since 1991, formally announces its new season schedule. All performances will be held at the Rose & Alfred Miniaci Performing Arts Center, 3100 Ray Ferrero, Jr Blvd on the Nova Southeastern University campus in Davie. The focus of the organization remains steadfastly on presenting artists of national and international repute under the aegis of Artistic Director Dr Ronald Weber and gently guided by the noted vibraphonist/educator Gary Burton. The artists who have performed for South Florida JAZZ over the years represent a who’s-who of the jazz world.

Tickets to all concerts can be purchased from the AutoNation box office at 954-462-0222; toll-free at 877-311-SHOW, online at southfloridajazz.org or browardcenter.org.

November 21, 2009 – 8:00 p.m.South Florida JAZZ 18th Anniversary Concert
ELIANE ELIAS

Brazil is a continent-sized nation blessed with abundant natural resources, including a seemingly endless supply of wonderful female singers, but none more and accomplished and ravishing than Eliane Elias, who is, at the very least, equally as renowned for her prowess as a jazz pianist. Eliane will traverse the rich musical terrain of her country with her quartet in this fundraising gala evening.

Tickets for this concert are $40 or $125 for VIP packages. All seats are reserved.

VIP packages include:
· Best seats first
· Pre-concert cocktail party
· 2010 South Florida JAZZ membership
· Discounts to all concert series performances
· Members only promotions

South Florida JAZZ Concert Series Tickets: $35 and $10 for students with I.D. All seating is reserved.

January 9, 2010 – 8:00 p.m.
KATHY KOSINS - “The Ladies of Cool – A Tribute to Julie London, June Christy, Anita O'Day and Chris Connor”
A Detroit, Michigan native, Kathy Kosins has explored the vocal jazz idiom of the West Coast “cool school,” with particular emphasis on those extraordinary singers of the 1940s and 1950s that were household names to jazz and pop fans alike in that era. Kathy is an accomplished interpreter of jazz, who has a voice and style that shares that intimate and alluring quality found in “The Ladies of Cool.”

February 13, 2010 – “Back By Popular Demand!”LARRY CORYELL – JOEY DEFRANCESCO TRIO
In the history of this jazz series, these two gentlemen are the most highly requested artists for repeat performance. Having them together, something they have begun only recently to do, is a particular treat. Guitarist Larry Coryell is a complex and brilliant player, who has been at the vanguard of jazz innovation for four decades. Joey DeFrancesco is the blues-drenched hard bop king of the Hammond B3 organ in the Jimmy Smith tradition.

March 13, 2010 – 8:00 p.m.
GARY BURTON and the NEXT GENERATION BAND

A multiple poll-winner, six-time Grammy-awarded artist, Gary Burton, is the premier vibraphonist and educator of this era. This will be the first Florida performance of his Next Generation Band that features Julian Lage, a fast-rising star on guitar, Ukrainian-born pianist and composer, Vadim Neselovskyi, bassist Luques Curtis, and drummer James Williams. This is an extraordinary quintet.

April 10, 2010 – 8:00 p.m.
OMAR SOSA AFREECANOS QUARTET – “Afro-Cuban Fire”

Electric and eclectic accurately describe the music of Omar Sosa, the three-time Grammy-nominated Cuban composer and pianist, as he continues to explore the African roots of music throughout the Diaspora, while employing modern jazz harmonies and traditional and modern-day instrumentation. Historically, his ensembles and recordings tend to fuse the folkloric with the contemporary, the ancestral with the urban - all with a purely Latin jazz heart and mentality.

May 8, 2010 – 8:00 p.m.KENNY WERNER QUARTET featuring JOE LOVANO - “Effortless Mastery”

Few jazz artists have the ability to let their musical creativity transcend and bridge multiple musical categories–gospel, classical, blues, even country. Pianist, composer, writer and philosopher Kenny Werner displays effortless mastery of his instrument every single day, as does Joe Lovano, one of the foremost saxophonists and innovators of our time. It is rare to have artists of their lofty standing appear together, and it has never happened in Florida. This will be a memorable jazz event.

June 12, 2010 – 8:00 p.m.
NICHOLAS PAYTON QUINTET – “From Young Lion to Standard Bearer”
Since 1994, when Nicholas Payton made his recording debut as a leader with From This Moment, the trumpeter has been lauded as a significant, top-tier voice in jazz. Even though he started out as a “young lion,” heralded as one of the new-generation guardians of the hard bop flame, Payton consistently committed himself to discovering his voice outside of the strict confines of that rearview mirror approach to the music. It was early on that curve that he performed for South Florida JAZZ in 1998 and again in 2001, dazzling the audiences with his pure tone and soul.
